DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS: Upscaling Technology Update for PC Gamers in 2026

AMD has announced frame pacing fixes and FSR 4.1 coming to Vulkan through FSR SDK 2.4. As for multi frame generation, do not assume an 8x mode exists. That option only appears in RadeonTuner on driver 26.6.2, does not work, and AMD has not confirmed it. AMD has only mentioned ML-based MFG for the FSR Diamond generation.

XeSS 3 From Intel

Intel released XeSS 3 with Multi-Frame Generation through Arc drivers 32.0.101.8425 and 8362 in January 2026. This feature inserts up to three generated frames between two real frames. Players can enable 3x and 4x modes in XeSS 2 games through the Intel override.

Driver 32.0.101.8509 expands MFG to Arc Alchemist, Battlemage, and Core Ultra integrated graphics. Even so, Multi Frame Generation is only available on Intel hardware. Early testing on the Arc A380 shows that entry-level cards lack the power for 4x mode.

XeSS SDK 2.1.1 removes the XMX accelerator requirement, so frame generation can run on older Nvidia and AMD GPUs. XeSS frame generation requires Xe Low Latency to be enabled on all devices. XeSS upscaling on non-Intel GPUs uses the DP4a path, which gives a softer result, and the number of supported games is still below DLSS and FSR.

Choose an Upscaler Based on Your GPU

A blind test in February 2026 with more than 1,000 gamers across six games showed that most picked DLSS 4.5 over FSR 4 and native rendering. A follow-up test in April 2026 showed DLSS still ahead, but FSR 4.1 starting to close the gap. For image quality, DLSS still leads.

In practice, your GPU decides: DLSS for Nvidia, FSR for AMD, and XeSS for Intel. RX 6000 owners now have a reason to try FSR 4.1. AMD has not published performance cost figures, so real results will only show up after testing.

Frame generation adds latency, so it suits single-player games better than competitive ones. It also works poorly when base fps is below 40 to 60. For that reason, compare DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS directly in the games you play most before buying a new GPU.
