Free-to-Play vs. Premium Games: Which Earns More in 2026?

Free-to-play vs. premium games: which earns more? See the latest data from Newzoo, Steam, and Indonesia’s 2026 game market for players and developers.

The debate over free-to-play vs. premium games is heating up again in 2026. Free-to-play (F2P) games can be downloaded at no cost and make money from in-game purchases. Premium games ask players to pay upfront before they can play.

Newzoo estimates the global games market will reach US$213.9 billion in 2026, up 6.1% from last year. Mobile games account for US$121.1 billion, consoles for US$46.9 billion, and PC for US$45.9 billion.

Microtransactions are expected to be the largest business model again. Premium releases and mid-priced games continue to support full-game sales revenue. In other words, both models still make money, but the results differ by platform.

Free-to-Play Revenue on PC and Steam

Newzoo’s 2026 PC and console report shows that F2P revenue per hour played on PC rose 10%. That increase came even as playtime fell 8.1%. On PC, microtransactions generated US$20.6 billion, while premium content brought in US$12.5 billion.

The first half of 2026 was weaker, however. According to Newzoo, most established live-service and evergreen games were flat or down compared with last year. Softer performance from both free-to-play and annual premium games put pressure on digital revenue in the six Western markets.

Steam data tells a different story. Alinea Analytics estimates that Steam revenue in September 2026 reached US$1.7 billion, up 13% from a year earlier. F2P games made up 25.6% of revenue among the top 500 titles, even though they were only 16% of those titles.

Four F2P games, Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG, and Dota 2, earned about US$168 million. That is almost 10% of Steam’s total revenue for the month.

The Strength of Premium Games Amid F2P Dominance

Counting free-to-play vs. premium games on Steam gives a different result. According to Alinea, premium games sold as a one-time purchase made up 78% of Steam revenue in the first half of 2026. This figure is only an estimate, not an official financial report. The 25.6% F2P share mentioned above applies only to the top 500 titles, not the entire Steam catalog.

Grand Theft Auto VI is the next big driver for premium games. Newzoo expects its release in November 2026 to lift console full-game spending by 17.5%. That is the highest growth of any business model. Without GTA VI, console revenue is expected to stay flat.

The premium model has another advantage: revenue is easier to predict. Developers also don’t have to design their games around a monetization system. Still, premium games must compete with free games that draw attention at no upfront cost.

Fungies’ 2026 monetization guide notes that many successful games combine several revenue sources. Battle passes with both free and paid rewards keep players engaged.

The State of Indonesia’s Game Market

An INDEF report puts the value of the national game market at around US$2 billion in 2025, equivalent to IDR 36 trillion. Local developers capture only about 5% of that revenue. Most Indonesian players still play games made abroad.

The market is dominated by free-to-play mobile games. Developer revenue depends on a small share of players who buy in-game items. This risk should be weighed before choosing a business model.

Garena is an example of this model’s success. Its segment revenue for 2025 reached US$2.41 billion, up 26.2% from 2024. Sea Limited says Free Fire remains one of the most-played mobile games in the world.

In the free-to-play vs. premium competition in Indonesia, mobile holds the largest share. Mobile accounts for more than 90% of national game industry revenue. Players willingly buy skins and battle passes in games like Free Fire and Mobile Legends.
