Gaming industry trends in 2026 are shaped by a $213.9 billion market, the debate over generative AI, and the growth of cloud gaming. See the latest data here.
Gaming industry trends in 2026 are unfolding in a market that is still growing, though the pace is starting to slow. Newzoo estimates the global games market will reach $213.9 billion this year, up 6.1 percent from last year. Consoles are projected to bring in $46.9 billion and, for the first time, surpass PC at $45.9 billion. Mobile remains the leader with a 57 percent share, or about $121.1 billion.
The biggest driver this year is Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games has scheduled its release for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Newzoo expects full-game spending on consoles to rise 17.5 percent, the highest of any business model. The PC version does not have a release date yet.
Player growth, on the other hand, is slowing. The global player count is expected to reach 3.7 billion in 2026, an increase of 4.4 percent. Newzoo says further growth depends on studios’ ability to retain and monetize the players they already have. As a result, 96 percent of studios now have a direct-to-consumer web store or plan to open one.
Generative AI Still Divides Developers
Generative AI is the hottest topic among developers. A 2026 GDC survey of more than 2,300 professionals found that 36 percent of respondents use generative AI tools in their work. The most common use is research or brainstorming, at 81 percent. At game studios, AI use stood at 30 percent, lower than at publishers and support teams.
Fifty-two percent of respondents say generative AI has a negative impact on the industry. That figure is up from 30 percent last year and 18 percent the year before. Only about 7 percent see a positive impact, down from 13 percent. A survey by Game Developer Collective and Omdia also found that generative AI use fell to 29 percent from 36 percent.
On Steam, AI use is becoming more visible. According to BCG, about 20 percent of new Steam releases disclose the use of AI, double the share from the previous year. BCG warns that AI could trigger a flood of new games, and low-quality products risk filling stores that are less curated. Developers who use AI carefully may also be tarnished by its bad reputation.
Cloud Gaming Grows from a Small Base
Cloud gaming enters 2026 with changes in pricing and services. Microsoft raised Game Pass Ultimate to $29.99 on October 1, 2025, then lowered it to $22.99 on April 21, 2026. Xbox is also testing a free, ad-supported cloud service in the Insiders channel. Since January 2026, NVIDIA has capped paid GeForce NOW subscribers at 100 hours of play per month.
The size of the market is still debated because each research firm uses a different definition. Mordor Intelligence puts it at $6.23 billion in 2026, with a projection of $21.62 billion by 2031. Fortune Business Insights uses a broader scope and arrives at $23.79 billion. Coherent Market Insights falls in the middle, at $14 billion.
Within the 2026 gaming industry trends, cloud gaming is still small compared with the overall market. According to data compiled by Tech Insider, its share is below 5 percent of the global market. Statista projects about 482.3 million cloud gaming users by mid-2026. That equals 6.1 percent of the world’s internet users.
Opportunities for Local Developers in the Indonesian Market
Indonesia is the largest games market in Southeast Asia, but local developers control only about 5 percent of it. An INDEF report shows the national games market grew from about $1.9 billion in 2022 to $2 billion in 2025. INDEF researchers say Indonesia plays more of a consumer role than a producer role in the global games industry.
The government has already laid the regulatory groundwork. Presidential Regulation No. 19 of 2024 governs the acceleration of the national games industry’s development. Presidential Regulation No. 37 of 2026 on the Creative Economy Master Plan 2026–2045 is expected to be a catalyst for the industry’s growth. In addition, the IGRS rating system was scheduled to begin operating in April 2026 as an age guide for players.
